Saint Fillan, was born in Ireland, the son of Feriach and Saint Kentigerna, and related to Saint Comgan. He dedicated his life to serving God and became a monk in his youth, joining the Saint Fintan Munnu monastery.

In the 8th century, Saint Fillan accompanied his mother Kentigerna and Comgan to Scotland. He chose a life of solitude and became a hermit, living in prayer and spiritual contemplation at Ptiienweem near the Saint Andrew monastery. Over time, he became renowned for his piety, holiness, and miracles.

Later, Saint Fillan was appointed as the abbot of Saint Andrews, where he diligently guided his community towards spiritual growth. His relics, including his bell and staff, have been preserved until today, reminding people of his holy presence and the miracles associated with him. One well-known legend surrounding Saint Fillan tells the story of a wolf that killed an ox employed by Fillan for church construction at Glendochart. When the wolf realized whose ox it was, it miraculously took the ox's place. Such tales and legends have shaped the popular perception of Saint Fillan over the centuries.

After his death in approximately 777, Saint Fillan was buried at Strath Fillan in Perthshire, Scotland. Devotion to him continued to grow, particularly among those suffering from mental illnesses. It was believed that if the mentally ill were dipped in a fountain in the church, tied up, and left overnight near Fillan's relics, their disorders would be miraculously cured. Those whose bonds were lost during the night were considered to be healed.

Saint Fillan's relics also played a significant role in the historic victory of Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn. It was believed that the presence of Fillan's relics brought divine protection and assistance to the Scottish forces.

Saint Fillan is honored as the patron saint against insanity, mental disorders, and mental illness. His feast day is celebrated on January 19th.
